attempts to stop Lt. Watada from speaking against illegal war
(June 9, 2006) - On Thursday, June 8, 2006 U.S. Army First Lieutenant
Ehren Watada's commanding officer moved to prosecute Lt. Watada for
protected speech. An official investigation into his public speech in
opposition to the illegal war in Iraq is underway. Lt. Watada was read
his rights and declined to make a statement without a lawyer present.
In response, Lt. Watada
confirmed, “I have a legal and ethical obligation to speak out
against, and refuse to fight, this patently illegal war in Iraq. This
has not changed.” |

First Officer Announces Refusal to Deploy to Iraq
By Sarah Olson, June 7, 2006
On Wednesday, June 7 Lt. Ehren
Watada became the first officer to refuse to deploy to Iraq, setting the
stage for what could be the biggest movement of GI resistance since the
Vietnam War. He faces a court-martial, up to two years in prison for
missing movement by design, a dishonorable discharge, and other possible
charges. He says speaking against an illegal and immoral war is worth all
of this and more. Journalist Sarah Olson spoke with Watada in late May
about his reasons for joining the military, and why he wants out. An
edited
audio version of this interview is available here. |

General, your
tank is a mighty vehicle.
It shatters the forest and crushes a hundred men.
But it has one defect: It needs drivers.
General, a man is quite expendable.
He can fly and he can kill.
But he has one defect: He can think!

AWOL Marine with Maui
ties flees to Canada
By CLAUDINE SAN NICOLAS
A former Maui man, saying he took exception to military instructions he received
as he trained for deployment to Iraq, has deserted from the U.S. Marines and is
in Canada seeking refugee status.
Lance Cpl. Christopher Scott Magaoay, formerly of Pukalani,
said he knows he may never be able to return to U.S. soil or even see his
4-year-old son living on Maui, but he’s willing to make the sacrifice because of
his opposition to the war in Iraq.

from ivaw.net
Iraq Veterans Against the
War (IVAW) is a group of veterans who have served since September 11th, 2001
including Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are
committed to saving lives and ending the violence in Iraq by an immediate
withdrawal of all occupying forces. We also believe that the governments that
sponsored these wars are indebted to the men and women who were forced to fight
them and must give their Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen the benefits
that are owed to them upon their return home.
We welcome all active duty, national guard, reservists, and recent veterans into
our ranks. Confidentiality can be assured.
What does this mean?

The World Can't Wait:
Drive out the Bush Regime
Your government,
on the basis of outrageous lies, is waging a murderous and utterly illegitimate
war in Iraq, with other countries in their sights.
Your government is
openly torturing people, and justifying it.
Your government puts
people in jail on the merest suspicion, refusing them lawyers, and either
holding them indefinitely or deporting them in the dead of night.
Your government is
moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of
Christian fundamentalism will rule.
Your government
suppresses the science that doesn't fit its religious, political and economic
agenda, forcing present and future generations to pay a terrible price.
Your government is
moving to deny women here, and all over the world, the right to birth control
and abortion.
Your government
enforces a culture of greed, bigotry, intolerance and ignorance. | | | | |
